NAB Show Amplified: From the Desk of Streambox
Bob Hildeman, CEO and co-founder of Streambox, reveals what products and technologies Streambox will be showing in its pod at the 2023 NAB Show, which takes place at the Las Vegas Convention Center April 15–19. Streambox will be showcasing Spectra VM and Bridge in Pod W3421J in the West Hall’s Connect Experiential Zone during NAB Show.
What has your company been working on since the last NAB Show?
Our main focus has been building out our streaming solutions for use in cloud-based virtual production and postproduction workflows. There are three general areas of interest here: getting live video up to the cloud over IP, without compromising quality; integrating with various SaaS creative apps, e.g. Flame, to return a high-quality, low-latency feed for reference monitoring/QC applications; distributing a secondary feed to remote collaborators. We now have unique solutions for each of these to enable an end-to-end cloud workflow that is as close as you can get to an on-prem experience.
What products or product categories are you highlighting at the 2023 NAB Show?
We will be showcasing our Spectra VM and Bridge products. Spectra VM is a highly flexible encoder that accepts input from cloud-deployed SaaS creative apps such as Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere, Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, Autodesk Flame and Epic Games Unreal Engine. It connect with the Creative app via a variety of input formats, including native API, Open F/X, NDI and Amazon CDI. Spectra VM then provides multiple encrypted outputs: a reference quality feed — with less than 70ms latency — back to the Creative person, a secondary encrypted feed that can be used to conduct multi-location collaborative sessions, and a CDI output that provides access to AWS Media services, such as Media Live and Media Connect.
Streambox Bridge for AWS CDI is a unique, highly flexible encoder/decoder that helps you build out AWS media workflows. It encodes/decodes between CDI and Video and provides up to 16 independent channels. In addition, it can provide a CDI bridge between multiple AWS Zones to enable a globe-spanning workflow. For added security it supports “air gapped” workflows, where the encoder and the creative app run on separate EC2 instances.
What recent technology developments do you think are the most exciting for the media and entertainment industry?
Virtual production, without a doubt! Unreal Engine running on AWS is a game changer. Having said that, there are some challenges that arise when working with cloud-deployed applications: latency, reference-quality signals for monitoring, and the ability to conduct remote reviews and collaborative sessions. Streambox Spectra VM addresses these challenges for Unreal Engine on AWS at each stage of a typical virtual production workflow, including pre-production, production and postproduction. Audio/video from the cloud is encrypted and sent to the production crew on the set, with less than 70ms latency and at quality levels up to 4K DCI, 4:4:4 12-bit. A second feed can be sent to remote collaborators. We will be demonstrating this at NAB Show in the Amazon AWS Booth.
