Using Open Cloud Infrastructure for Live Production | Source: SMPTE

Broadcasters cast an eye to the cloud for live streaming media.

“As cloud computing and cloud services become ubiquitous for business, it’s no surprise that broadcasters are also looking to use the cloud for live production. However, current cloud connections are not up to the quality standards required for low latency live streaming media. Therefore, research into quality-enhancing technologies, such as retransmission or Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ), is crucial to improving the network infrastructure required to deliver broadcast-quality transmissions.”

AT A GLANCE:

As cloud services become more ubiquitous and less expensive, broadcasters are becoming eager to utilize the cloud, especially in live streaming media production. The problem is that cloud services lack the quality necessary for transmission of live media, with the main concerns being loss and latency. Additionally, public cloud service providers, such as Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure Media Services lack the end-to-end control of their connections, as video moves through third-party hands to and from their data centers.

Addressing the questions of loss and latency, two transport protocols, Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) and Reliable Internet Stream Transport (RIST), have emerged as the likely standards for the foreseeable future. Additional technologies will continue to be developed and implemented to overcome the current drawbacks of the cloud in presenting live media.
