Wimbledon Broadcast Services shared more of the 2024 Championships action in HDR this year, responding to what NEP UK Technical Project Manager Sam Broadfoot described as “in demand” technology, according to NEP.
NEP UK and Ireland has provided technical support for this Grand Slam since 2014.
To support its 50p HDR coverage, NEP deployed its Ceres, Venus and Pacific OB trucks. The qualifying matches were also supported via two dedicated OB trucks from NEP Ireland’s OBStv.
Additionally, specialty capture division Fletcher deployed AI-enabled Totally Realtime Automated Camera Engine (TR-ACE) system on seven of the 18 courts. The TR-ACE system relies on one operator and autonomous tracking via LIDAR and image-recognition technologies.
Creative Technology joined with SMT to stream the qualifying matches on 18 total courts with UHD cameras and microphones. Feeds were distributed with score graphics.
For this year’s tournament alone, NEP said it installed more than “90km of cable, 150 talkback panels, 93 Sony cameras and 50 EVS machines.” Its on-site crew also consisted of more than 500 people.
More than 10 broadcasters leveraged 130+ EVS products from NEP Edit & Ingest as well as 1PB of storage. Wimbledon rights holders were able to remotely access highlights, press conferences and clips via a 10G IMG NEP Connect link to NEP’s media asset management tool, Mediabank, in Oslo.
Wimbledon attendees could also experience new “fan engagement screens” as well as upgraded displays at the No. 1 Court Wimbledon Shop. NEP says Creative Technology managed.
This year, the players’ tunnel also featured “an immersive projection experience,” installed by CT London, which also coordinated the IPTV system for the venue’s 2,000 TVs. CT also managed 106 LED displays, including screens for Aorangi Terrace and the Southern Village.
